Condition
Frame: 37 x 31 3/4 inches. Canvas is lined. Craquelure throughout commensurate with age. UV light shows surface varnish, but no evidence of repair. Minor paint loss in subject's hair, as well as scattered light surface scuffs and a 2-inch scratch in the lower left corner.

Handwritten paper label affixed to the frame reads: Elizabeth, Daughter of Sir Edward Dering of Sunenden Dering of Kent (a "very pretty woman" according to Pepys). Born 1644. Married 1664 Sir Robert Southwell Diplomat. Died Jan. 13, 1681. Buried at Henbury Church near Bristol. [...] Her children were Rupert (b. 1670-d. 1678), and 4 daughters Helena, Elizabeth, Mary and Catherine; together with another largely illegible handwritten paper label.
