A Marble Sarcophagus, Roman Period or later
Height 18 x width 54 x depth 15 inches.
Condition
Marble panels with plaster backing. Surface ware typical of age with elements of plaster fill and restoration. Left, front, and right panel with losses to horse's legs, soldiers, and their appendages. Larger loses to horse's front legs with minor loses and chips overall. Subtle infilling on cracks typical of aged sarcophagus only evident under UV light. Fine, stable and attractive condition overall. A more thorough condition report can be provided upon request.

The sarcophagus was procured and placed at Hurstmont Mansion (Morristown, New Jersey) by Sanford White, who was the architect and designer who built the house. Many sarcophagi are mentioned among the various letters, effects, etc. of James T. Pyle, the original owner who commissioned the estate.
