Property from the Estate of Alice Kaivel, Long Island, New York and Star Island, Florida
Condition
Frame: 19 5/8 x 15 3/4 inches. Craquelure visible. Examination under UV shows a mostly cleaned surface, but with some areas of in-painting due to flaked losses to the drapery on Venus and her female attendant, as well as to their arms and torso. Traces of old text in place paint visible to the back of the board. Dust and dirt visible to the surface. Scattered scuffs and abrasions visible in some areas. There is an old vertical age crack running from the top down to the blue textile laid across the goddess’s lap. The wooden lattice structure on the back is likely later and to keep the split from further expanding. The frame shows areas of loss to the gesso and gilding, and the corners are slightly loose and detached, it will need to be reinforced.
