Description
A John Henry Belter Four-Piece Parlor Suite
19th Century
Height of settee 38 x width 64 x depth 30 inches; height of chairs 36 3/4 x width 19 x depth 18 inches.
Condition
Three of the four pieces in sturdy condition and can be sat upon. The dark walnut color of the veneers is even and consistent throughout the four pieces. There are scattered small chips in the laminate layers along the edges as is normal for the age. Some of the chips may have small amounts of dark stain overpainting. There are some small laminate chips along the top edges of the carved details (flowers and leaves) but no large breaks. One of the three chairs lacks upholstery and has its webbing detached but present. That chair has been partially restored with newer wood added to the underside of its seat rail and seat blocks where they would be covered by the upholstery. The upholstery of the chairs is newer, clean and intact; the upholstery of the sofa is somewhat worn and separating from the age on one side. It needs replacing. The backs of the chairs are solid laminate; the back of the sofa is upholstered.
