Driskell (1937-2020) is celebrated for his legacy of spotlighting the art of Black people in America and is considered by many the founding scholar of African American art as a field of study. He is highly regarded for his 1976 landmark exhibition Two Centuries of Black American Art, now widely recognized as a pivotal moment in American art history. His own artwork ranging from paintings, collages, prints, and drawings is recognized for its intimacy and innovative abstraction.
