Description
A Louis XVI Giltwood Six-Piece Salon Suite
Circa 1780
comprising a pair of bergères and four fauteuils.
Height 40 x width 29 x depth 30 inches.
Condition
Each very sturdy and usable condition. The gilding with signs of age but not original. Very little looseness in the joints. All of the chairs have had the bottoms of their legs extended by approximately 3/4 of an inch to raise the height; there is gold overpainting faintly visible on the added parts of the bottoms of the legs. Frames appear to be in mostly original condition without later seat blocks added. Heavily rubbed hand-holds on the arms, with lost gilding and gesso, adding to the favorable patina of the chairs. Small chips and gilt losses exposing white gesso throughout, as is normal. Upholstery mostly intact; slightly worn, but with fraying only on three of the chairs' arms. Cushions are filled with down. Seat height 18 inches. Additional photos available upon request.
