Framed: 36 1/2 x 30 1/4 inches.Moderate deposits of surface dirt and dust; canvas is lined; passages of the canvas are pressed from the lining process; a small, shallow indentation to canvas with associated pinpoint paint losses in upper right corner; stretcher bar marks around image perimeter, accompanied by slightly cracking paint; localized area of craquelures in the forehead of the sitter and in his white cravat; inpainting visible under normal viewing conditions along right and left edges, as well as in small areas of inpainting scattered through the background; brown stains and liquid droplets scattered throughout the surface. Under UV light: inpainting along all edges; spots of inpainting along the bridge and side of the sitter's nose; an area of inpainting in lower left of background; liquid stains and droplets also fluoresce.
