The Order of the Owls was founded in 1904 in South Bend, Indiana by John W. Talbot. Membership consisted of men across a variety of professions whose mission focused on improving the general welfare of members and their families.

According to U.S. Federal Census returns, Elmer Bain (1873-1942) owned a poultry farm in Union, Indiana. He and his wife, Ida, had two sons.
