Description
An Aubusson Wool Tapestry
18th Century
9 feet 3 inches x 9 feet 11 inches.
Property from a Private Collection, Little Rock, Arkansas
Condition
Attractive, ready-to-hang condition overall. The wear and gentle restoration throughout is consistent with age and typical for an 18th century tapestry. The colors are well conserved generally, but with some fading in the greens (to blue) and yellows (to gold). Areas of fraying and threadbare weave on the figures' clothing. Scattered small re-woven areas and sewn repairs. Unsure if reduced from a larger tapestry; the border appears visually continuous and un-altered. Several patched areas around the outer blue selvedge. The outer gold border has evenly-spaced brown discolorations which are probably rust stains from an earlier hanging apparatus. Mounted to newer linen backing.
