**Smith & Wesson Model 1917

World War I

.45 ACP. 5.5" barrel length. SN: 32320. Blued metal finish with casehardened hammer and trigger mounting smooth walnut grips with a lanyard loop to the butt. Double action six-shot hand ejector revolver with topstrap notch and forged half-circle front blade sights. Government markings included UNITED STATES PROPERTY to the underside of the barrel and U.S./ARMY/MODEL/1917 on the butt. Left frame is struck with the GHS monogram of ordnance inspector Gilbert H. Stewart, whose mark commonly appears on earlier Model 1917 production before the Ordnance Bomb logo became standard. Serial number marking matches on the butt, barrel, cylinder, in pencil on the right grip panel, and the star extractor. Assembly number on the frame and crane reads 5476. Smith & Wesson markings include the standard caliber marking to the left barrel. Top of barrel marked in two-lines SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS. U.S.A./PATENTED DEC. 17. 1901. FEB. 6. 1906. SEPT. 14. 1909.

Good. Bore is Frosty with brown patina throughout and crisp rifling. Blued finish is strong with some light edgewear, thinning on the topstrap, and abrasions to the flanks of the barrel. Further abrasion to the top of the sight. Flaking of the finish on the gripstraps. Brown patina forming in losses. Casehardened components display pinpoint patina. Some oxidation visible beneath the cylinder latch and on the edges of the frame. Grips show handling wear and some light dents. Grip screw head is partly stripped. Left panel edges are more rounded and worn than the right, and the forward edge of the left panel is chipped. Action exhibits good timing.
