Provenance
Literature:F. Robert Treichler, A History of Northeast Ohio Stoneware, Carlisle Printing: Sugarcreek, Ohio, 2011, p. 97.As Treichler notes, this piece was likely made on contract for Berry who established a general store in the settlement of Brittain, now Akron, Ohio in 1869. By 1880, Berry was listed as a grocer in U.S. Federal Census returns, and he likely used this and similar crocks to advertise his business. Treichler speculates that these crocks were made by the Colvin family who were Berry's immediate neighbors.
