Description
A Louis XVI Style Gilt Bronze Mounted Japanese Lacquer and Ebony Marble-Top Commode à Vantaux
After the Model by Martin Carlin, Paris, Circa 1890
Height 37 x width 60 x depth 21 inches.
This lot is located in Chicago.
Condition
Appears in sturdy and ready to place condition. The lacquer panels have vertical cracks consistent with age. The bronze mounts all appear to be present and have likely been re-gilded with an even flat gold appearance.. On the center front door, there is possibly a small break from the tip of the bronze mount. The proper left column is loose within each of its joints, but intact. There is a piece of veneer missing from the back of the proper right side. Chips and cracking veneer on the tops of the turret corners with small amounts of overpainting to conceal chips. Includes one removable shelf for the center cabinet and each side cabinet. Marble top appears to be original and is intact without cracks or significant chips, some faint discolorations.
Provenance
Note:The design for this commode is taken from the celebrated model by Martin Carlin delivered in 1785 to Madame Victoire, daughter of Louis XV, for her ‘grand cabinet’ at the Château de Bellevue. That commode is now in the Collection of the Musee du Louvre.
