Meiji Period (1868-1912)

The pair of vases of impressive scale, the wide mouth top cast with tengu among cherry blossoms, the border adorned with fret pattern motifs with pendant cloud scroll lappets, the middle section with a bold high-relief eagle perched on a branch on one side, the other side with a nobleman in a landscape, flanked by two pine tree form handles, the lower register enhanced with Japanese genre cartouches, below a lotus petal form platform, all above tripod beast form legs. The second vase is similarly modeled with a noblewoman in a landscape.
