Description
A Chippendale Style Mahogany Block-Front Claw and Ball Foot Slant-Front Desk
19th Century, incorporating earlier elements
with a later fan-carved slant lid.
Height 43 3/4 x width 46 x depth 24 inches.
Property from the Estate of William B. Woolf, Evanston, Illinois
Condition
In overall fair and stable condition. Appears to retain the original drawer pulls. Retaining a fairly even refinished surface, with variety to the color, in particular where there may have been old scratches or repairs. Scuffs, marks and scratches consistent with age and use. The fan carving to the stand lid is later. There are patches to the writing surface and the slant where the hinges previously broke out, the patch to the surface is about 2” and runs the width of the case, while the patches to the slant are each about 2”x5”. There is a triangular patch to the top at the junction with the lock clasp. The feet appear to be 19th century and likely were added later. The side return is lacking from the proper front left foot. The back and underside of the case having an applied painted surface. The lock mechanisms are likely 20th century.
