She was the wife of conductor Hans Kindler, who had been hired at the Philadelphia Orchestra by Leopold Stokowski, a close friend of Carles. In the early 1920s, the couple moved to Senlis, France. Judging from the French stencil mark on the back of the painting, the present work was likely painted in France, when the artist stayed with Steichen at Voulangis.
