Two US Model 1860 Light Cavalry Sabers

American Civil War

1) US Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber with no visible maker's mark. 34.25" slightly curved single edged blade with 27" stopped median fuller. 40.75" in overall length. 6" hilt with cast brass two-branch guard and knuckle bow and grooved leather covered wood grip with 12 wraps of twisted wire. Ricasso with no visible maker's mark and with weak, only partially legible date and inspector mark. No scabbard present.
2) 1864 Dated US Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber by Mansfield & Lamb with post-Civil War plated scabbard. 34.5" slightly curved single edged blade with 27" stopped median fuller. 41.25" in overall length. 6.25" hilt with cast brass two-branch guard and knuckle bow and grooved leather covered wood grip with 12 wraps of twisted wire. Reverse ricasso with Mansfield and Lamb maker's cartouche, obverse with U.S./C.E.W./1864 markings. Includes a later, incorrect pattern scabbard and leather sword knot.

Condition
1) Fair. Most markings cleaned off blade. Blade heavily oxidized with a bluish-brown patina, scattered surface roughness and some pitting. Grip worn with much of the leather missing.2) Good. Blade cleaned with scattered oxidized freckling. Markings on blade clear. Grip with moderate wear. Incorrect scabbard with much of the thinning plating intact.
