A Pair of Chippendale Carved Walnut Side Chairs

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Circa 1770

Each example appears to retain their original slip seat, one chair and slip seat marked, "V," and the other, "VI."

Height 40 3/8 x width 22 1/2 x depth 20 1/2 inches.

Condition
both have been refinished; Chair 1: all knee returns replaced, with one partial old element to one return, numbered "V" to the seat, top molding of shoe has been nailed on, repaired breaks to either side of crest at stile attachment, with patches to rear of bothChair 2: numbered "IV"; right-facing back leg with repaired break- two screws visible for reinforcement, one knee return replaced, patches to right-facing stile, crack to back left-facing stile, top molding of shoe has been nailed on, with old age crack to crest that has been re-glued, wear to feet, patch to inner toe of front right-facing foot
