[ENSLAVEMENT]. Manuscript appraisal of an enslaved girl named Juda. Union Co., AR, 1856.
One page, 7 5/8 x 12 5/8 in. Verso with circuit court clerk's certification and Union Circuit Court seal affixed at left.
"We...having been called on by Marshall Parnell to appraise a certain negro girl named Juda of dark complexion and aged about thirteen or fourteen years at this present time...do depose and say that said girl at the time she came to the possession of the said Parnell, to wit, about January A. D. 1855 was worth the sum of five hundred dollars Dollars [sic] and no more to the best of our judgment, belief & understanding - from all that we can see and all that we know of said girl so help us God."
Signed and sworn before a Justice of the Peace, 4 August 1856.
Marshall Parnell enlisted in the CSA on or around 1 June 1862 as a sergeant, and mustered into Company I, 37th Arkansas Infantry Regiment that same day. Other details about his service were not listed in HDS.
