[CIVIL WAR]. War-date document detailing the forced hire of enslaved men to serve in the CSA Army.
"Notice." Partly printed document completed in manuscript. Ocala, Florida, 4 February 1865. 1 pp, 7 1/2 x 12 in. Confederate document regarding the requisition of slaves for service in the Confederate Army. Signed by the enrollment officer for Marion and Juniper Counties, Florida. Docketed on verso.
Issued to "Est. W.H. Howard," likely the estate of William Hatton Howard (1812-1857), the document states: "You are hereby notified that the Confederate Government has made requisition on this State for five hundred Slaves, under the Act to increase the efficiency of the Army, by the enrollment of free negroes and slaves in certain capacities, approved February 17, 1864. Your appointment under this call is Two able bodied male slaves, between the ages of 18 and 50. (The rates being one for every 35 slaves owned by any person, without regard to age or sex.)" The document further states that if the slaves are not furnished for hire by Howard they will be impressed into service.
Verso with a list of 19 names under "Est. W.H. Howard," presumably persons enslaved by Howard's descendants and considered part of his estate, including: "Nathan," "Abram," "Arch," "Silas," "Jane," "Betty," and "Mary."
