Description

Confederate Cleaned & Repaired (C&R) Marked US Model 1842 Musket with "&" and "Z" Inspection Marks

American Civil War

.69 caliber. 42" barrel. NSN. Bright finish, walnut stock with three spring retained flat barrel bands. Single shot smoothbore percussion muzzleloading musket, rebuilt by a Confederate arsenal with a Springfield lock dated 1850 and a Harpers Ferry barrel also dated 1850. Retains brass blade front sight, sling swivels and a correct trumpet head ramrod that is short of full length. Standard Springfield lock markings, barrel with Harpers Ferry proofs and PB/P inspection. Counterpane with script Harpers Ferry AR and JAS cartouches. There are two marks forward of the triggerguard that are believed to be Confederate rebuild reinspection marks, a & and a Z. These are discussed in Steven Knott's book Captured & Collected - Confederate Reissued Firearms. A good example of a Confederate rebuilt musket made from Springfield and Harpers Ferry parts, with two different inspection marks. {ANTIQUE}
