Winchester Late 2nd Model 1873 Rifle with Single Set Trigger and Shotgun Butt in .38-40


.38-40. 24" octagonal barrel. SN: 97506 (mfg. ca. 1882). Blued finish, color casehardened lever and hammer, brass cartridge lifter, smooth walnut shotgun butt and smooth forend. Lever action tubular magazine fed repeating rifle with adjustable single set trigger and semi-buckhorn elevation adjustable rear sight, dovetailed blade front sight, screw secured dust cover rail and sliding dust cover. Standard two-line Winchester markings, caliber marking on top of barrel and on bottom of lifter. Shotgun butt does not have a trapdoor for cleaning rods. An email records request to the Cody Firearms Museum did not list the shotgun butt, but did note the set trigger on the rifle and all other features matched. The rifle was received in the warehouse on November 28, 1882 and was shipped on June 28, 1883 on order number 5218. No further information was available. {ANTIQUE}

Condition
Very good. Bore moderately oxidized and dark with strong rifling and some lightly scattered pitting. Barrel with some of the blue on the barrel, with high edge wear and loss, and areas of weakness toning to plum. Magazine tube mostly a plum brown, frame with some strong traces of blue and mostly a plum brown patina. Lever and hammer with a rich dark blue patina and traces of dull mottling. markings clear and crisp. Mechanically functional action. Wood with scattered bumps, dings and mars and some some old white paint on the wood and buttplate. Forend with some scrapes as well.
