Provenance:Bequest of Mr. and Mrs. Rowland Evans, 1956 (accession numbers 1956.61.1 and 1956.61.2),Sold by order of the Board of Trustees of the Philadelphia Museum of Art to benefit acquisitions.Note: The Spanish Minister to the United States, Don Josef de Jaudenes y Nebot (1764-1818) married Matilda Stoughton (1778-after 1822) in New York, in 1794. Matilda was the sixteen-year old daughter of Spanish Consul, John Stoughton of Boston. Gilbert Stuart painted the couple the year of their marriage and the portraits are now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
