Provenance
Provenance:Sold: Sotheby's, London, November 30, 2000, Lot 235J.E. Safra, acquired from the above saleSold: Christie's, London, July 6, 2023, Lot 9Acquired at the above sale by the present ownerLot note:This large drawing appears to be a capriccio, suggesting a date in the 1790s, when Sandby was experimenting with constructed, idealized compositions. The castle to the right recalls Harlech Castle, a subject Sandby depicted many times. The artist's capriccios often include a prominent tree in the foreground as a framing device, as seen in the present work.
