CDV on cardstock mount with typewritten caption beneath image reading, "Execution of the Conspirators, 7 July, 1865. No. 2." Verso with imprint of "Gardner, Photographer," and publishers Philp & Solomons. 2-cent US Internal Revenue stamp on verso.

Alexander Gardner captured a series of 10 images of the execution of conspirators Mary Surratt, Lewis Powell, George Atzerodt, and David Herold, showing various points in the process. This image, known as "The Drop," shows the gallows where the conspirators are hung. Many men are standing on the platform and soldiers line the top of a wall in the background.
