Description

*Composite US Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle with .40-90 Marked Barrel

.40-90 (Marked Barrel appears incomplete). 32.5" barrel length. SN: 42019. Blued metal refinish overall with case colored receiver and breechblock set in walnut straight wrist stock with full length forend retained by two U stamped barrel bands, and a checkered steel semi-pistol grip extension to the wrist. Single shot trapdoor action rifle mounting Model 1877 pattern adjustable rear ladder and front blade sights. Rear sight base and ladder marked R for rifle. Breechblock marked MODEL/1873/{Eaglehead}/US on the upper flat. Lockplate marks include {Spread Wing Eagle} followed by U.S./SPRINGFIELD. Stock is struck with the boxed SWP/1881 cartouche of inspector Samuel W Porter with a further circle P to the wrist. Rifle features a high arch breechblock, three click tumbler, two-piece triggerguard with sling swivel, and stacking swivels to the upper barrel band. Top of the barrel struck with caliber marking 40-90, but the barrel itself appears to be smoothbore, suggesting it may have been smoothed prior to sleeveing for a different cartridge. It currently measures .41" caliber at the muzzle. {MODERN}
