8vo. Original light blue cloth; dust jacket (chipping with losses, mostly to spine, few closed tears). Provenance: Ruth White Lowry (1884-1974), Hemingway's cousin and Kansas City native (recipient of Hemingway's inscription); pencil annotations to first few leaves

FIRST GERMAN EDITION of The Sun Also Rises. INSCRIBED BY HEMINGWAY TO HIS COUSIN, RUTH LOWRY: "To Ruth, this fine book not knowing what is in it—Ernest."

The Sun Also Rises was banned and burned in Nazi Germany in 1933 as part of the infamous book burnings orchestrated by the regime. The Nazis targeted works they deemed "un-German," including those promoting liberalism, Marxism, or containing sexual innuendo. Hemingway's novel was condemned for its portrayal of disillusioned youth and its depiction of decadence, which the Nazis considered a threat to their ideological values. Hanneman D87.
