4 volumes, 4to (273 x 203 mm). 4 engraved vignette titles, 124 engraved plates. (Some spotting or toning to a few plates, small dampstain to first engraved title.) Contemporary half morocco, marbled boards, spine in 5 compartments with 4 raised bands, gilt-lettering in second, all edges gilt (some light surface wear to covers and a touch to extremities).

FIRST EDITION. Allom's engravings, after drawings from Staunton's collection, show many places in the interior of China that were new to Western eyes, and considered "the best-known nineteenth-century work on the subject" (ODNB). Cordier Sinica 80-81; Löwendhahl 986; Lust 363.
