Provenance
literature Directional, manufacturer's catalog, unpaginated catalog noteA pioneer of the Brutalist movement, Paul Evans developed new techniques using acid-patinated and enameled, welded steel, or sculpted bronze resin and various metal patchwork designs in his works. His hands-on approach to the fabrication process adds a touch of individuality to each piece. The table and chairs offered were created using a sculpted bronze technique. After unsuccessfully experimenting with metal flakes applied to plaster, a spraying metal technique was inspired when Dorsey Reading, while stuck in traffic, observed a team spray-coating metal to a boat hull. Sculpted bronze (or 'goop' as the shop referred to it internally) became the signature texture of the Evans collaboration with the Directional manufacturing line.
