[MILITARY]. Archive of photographs and documents related to the US Military Academy at West Point. 


11 photographs of people and places, each approx. 5 1/4 x 6 3/4 in., mounted on 8 1/2 x 11 1/4 in. sheet (some toning and wear to prints; significant spotting, some adhesive residue, and some wear to mounts). Subjects include: Reverend J. W. French, Chaplain and Professor of Ethics. -- Cadet James E. Bell, Class of 1867, who would serve in the 1st US Artillery and die of yellow fever at the Dry Tortugas on 13 September 1873. -- Cadet Thomas R. Adams, Class of 1867, who would serve in the 5th US Artillery. -- Cadet Allyn Capron, Class of 1867, who would serve in the 1st US Artillery and participate in the Sioux Campaign of 1890 and the Spanish-American War. -- Cadet James Bassell, Class of 1867, who would serve in the 2nd US Artillery, but would resign three years after graduating. -- 2 similar views of the Academic Building and a portion of the Barracks. -- A farther away view of the Barracks and Academic Building. -- A front view of the Barracks. -- A picturesque view down a tree-lined avenue with the Barracks building on the viewer's left and a barely visible (due to motion) American flag flying from the top tower. -- A corps of cadets lined up in a field. -- Together, 11 photographs.

A group of 3 documents related to the campus visits of important military and political figures, including: 2 manuscript "Special Orders" dated 11 and 12 June 1878, outlining special demonstrations to be made upon the visits of Lieutenant General Sheridan (11 June) and President Rutherford B. Hayes (12 June). -- Printed orders with mourning border, announcing how the academy will handle the funeral of President Chester Arthur. 20 November 1886. -- Together, 3 documents.
